Floral motifs have been a consistent feature of decorated initials, from traditional manuscript initials to modern press interpretations. Representations of flowers can be both stylised and realistic, and are incorporated into various styles of initials including "passe-partout" and ornamental letters.

A foliated (floriated) initial letter “O” as follows: A strong solid ltter O with a nub on the inside and ouside on each side and with an outline, and with stylized acanthus or vine leaves and round fruit. This floriated letter “O” was used as an initial Floriated initials book (a drop cap) on a title page inside this ornate mediæval border.

The letter has an unusual spiral line round it, vines, leaves, and a strongly angled calligraphic stress. It dates from a book printed in   Frederic W. Goudy designed Floriated initials book floriated initials in the early 's, and under his direction (Goudy was Lanston's Art Director for several decades) Lanston cut the matrices for casting lead type and released them as Goudy Initials, No The fine craftsmanship has been appreciated by typographers for 70 years.
